 The Friday Harbor Kiwanis Club is proud to announce that the Honeywell Charitable Fund has awarded a $25,000 grant to support scholarships for Friday Harbor students pursuing traditional college degrees or trade school training in 2027. This generous gift continues a partnership now in its twelfth year, one that has become a cornerstone of educational opportunity for local graduates.

During this long‑standing relationship, Kiwanis and the Honeywell Charitable Fund have awarded $195,000 in scholarships to 202 students, helping young people take their next steps toward meaningful careers and financial independence.

 

At graduation this year, Kiwanis awarded 13 traditional college scholarships and 6 trade school scholarships. Over the last three years, 50% of all Kiwanis scholarships have gone to trade school students, reflecting a growing recognition of the value and demand for skilled trades in the region.

Kiwanis Scholarship Chairman Jack Rice noted, “Our partnership with Dave and Nancy Honeywell continues to open doors for students of every path, academic or technical. Their commitment to our island’s youth has changed lives, strengthened our workforce, and created opportunities that simply wouldn’t exist without their support.”

Trade School Success Stories

The impact of the Honeywell scholarships can be seen in the remarkable achievements of recent graduates:

• Jack Mason a scholarship recipient, attended watch repair school and now works for Rolex Watch Co.

•  Ryan Rothenberg earned his pilot’s license and is on track to become a commercial pilot.

• Teagan August completed CDL training and now drives commercial vehicles for a local construction company.

• Two student, Emillio Bayes and Eydan Cazarez are currently enrolled in electrical lineman apprenticeship programs and will soon be seeking employment with regional utilities — OPALCO, take note.

These stories highlight how trade school pathways are providing high‑skill, high‑demand careers for island students.

A Legacy of Local Support

Dave and Nancy Honeywell have demonstrated a deep and ongoing commitment to the San Juan Island community. Their philanthropy has supported youth programs, local nonprofits, and educational initiatives across the island. Kiwanis is grateful for their continued partnership and for the lasting impact their generosity has made on hundreds of Friday Harbor families.

The 2027 scholarship cycle will open next  spring, with awards distributed at graduation in June 2027. Kiwanis encourages all seniors, whether pursuing university degrees or skilled trade certifications, to apply.
